Tips of the Trade:

Hawaiian Tax Credit Investors

The State of Hawaii is attempting to encourage films to be shot in that State.. The State has enacted a program that expires on December 31, 2005 that allows residents of Hawaii to obtain a 100% tax credit for investment in motion pictures that are shot in Hawaii.

The producer must be willing to spend at least 75% of the budget for the film in Hawaii, shoot at least 75% of the film in Hawaii and maintain a production office in Hawaii.

The tax credit allows investment of up to Two Million Dollars. The credit also allows Hawaii residents to obtain a multiple of the credit when combined with non-Hawaii resident investors (who do not pay tax in Hawaii). All in all this is a very attractive investment for residents of Hawaii.

In such matters, Hawaii counsel is retained by our clients and our firm coordinates with Hawaii counsel in not only qualifying the project, but in identifying Hawaiian investors who wish to participate in film investment through these laws.

Therefore, if:
  1. You are interested in shooting your film in Hawaii
  2. Have raised half of your budget and are looking for matching funds

Contact our office to set up a free consultation in order to see if we can help you fund your film under the Hawaii program.
